Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings Explained

The EN Rating scale is a scientific test to determine the warmth of a sleeping bag. The test produces a Lower rating (for male sleepers) and a Comfort rating (for female sleepers). Both are listed in the features table on the product page.

A unisex sleeping bag with a Lower limit of 23oF means a man should be comfortable down to air temperatures of 23oF. The same bag will also have a Comfort limit, in the realm of 32°F, so a woman would be comfortable down to an air temperature of 32oF. These ratings require a sleeping mat with an R-Value appropriate for expected ground temperatures – without this, the sleeping bag itself is unlikely to keep the sleeper warm enough.

A variety of factors impact sleeping bag warmth - the above temperatures are merely guidelines, not guarantees. It’s important to think of a sleeping bag, an appropriately insulating sleeping pad and a liner as a sleep system. For example - if you plan on sleeping in nighttime air temperatures of 27oF / -3°C, choose a bag with a gender-appropriate rating of 23°F / -5°C, plus a sleeping mat with an R-Value of 2.5 to 3, and consider a Reactor thermal liner.

If you are looking for a lightweight sleeping pad, but you will not compromise on comfort, durability, insulation or ease of use, look no further. The Air Sprung Cell? design delivers stability and support, while our lamination and weld quality set new standards for reliability. Thermolite? and Exkin Platinum? insulation deliver performance that is tested in the Swiss Federal Material Labs (EMPA) to give an R-Value of 3.3, perfect for late spring through early fall camping. The patented multi-function valve and pump integrated into the stuff sack mean effortless inflation and deflation.

Is the Ultralight Sleeping Mat...?

  • Really comfortable being only 2” thick??Yes. Thickness is not the key factor in an air mattress; the number of points of suspension is. Your body weight is supported by 181 individual air-filled pockets (size Regular)

  • Insulated well to protect me from the cold air and ground temps??Yes. Two types of insulation prevent radiant and convective heat loss – the mats have a tested R-Value of 3.3, and the lack of internal air movement means minimal loss of warmth compared to other designs.

  • Noisy when I shift around in my sleep??No. The reflective material (Exkin Platinum?) and the outer laminate material are both very quiet. Your tentmate will thank you in the morning.

Which Air Mat should I choose?

The Ultralight offers a good level of comfort and insulation at a relatively low weight. If you would like even more comfort and three to four season performance, you may move up to the Comfort Light. Need yet more support and warmth? The Comfort Plus may be the way to go.

All Sea to Summit Air Sprung Cell mats offer unmatched durability and reliability.

Our blog post "Which Mat Should I Choose" has some helpful tips on picking the perfect air mat (or reasons why you might prefer a Self-Inflating mat).

  • R-Value of 3.3 – sufficient warmth for late Spring to early Fall camping.
  • Exkin Platinum? fabric and Thermolite? insulation are combined to prevent heat loss.
  • Multi-function valve for fast and easy inflation, deflation and fine tuning of air pressure.
  • The strongest face fabric and lamination available in a backpacking air mat. It’s about tough love – we build things tough, so you will love them.
  • An anti-microbial treatment is added to the liquid extrusion TPU lamination to prevent delamination/mold issues caused by moist air trapped inside the mat.
  • Comes with a quality stuff sack which doubles as a pump, a repair kit containing six self-adhesive patches for repairing punctures in the field, and a spare silicone one-way valve insert.

Technical Features

Single Layer Air Sprung Cells?

Air Sprung Cells? are the core technology used in Sea to Summit Air Mats and are the reason you will sleep more comfortably on a Sea to Summit mat than on a conventional air pad. Inspired by the hundreds of springs found in a modern pocket sprung mattress, the hundreds of small interconnected chambers (called Air Sprung Cells?) perfectly support your weight and conform to your body contours.

The Ultra Light range has a single layer of medium resolution cells to give you the lightest and smallest packed volume mat without compromising on Sea to Summit's Air Sprung Cell comfort.

Integrated AirStream?

The Airstream? Pumpsack is Sea to Summit's big volume mattress pump which we've now integrated into the stuff sack of every Air Sprung Cell? mat. The clever design opens at one end to stow the air mat and the other end unfolds to become the built-in?pump.

The Airstream? Pumpsack can be inflated with a single breath and takes just two or three cycles to fill our mats. Not only is it faster than inflation by mouth, but there is minimal breath condensation entering the mat and it eliminates dizziness from?blowing the mat up directly by mouth.

The Airstream? Pumpsack is also compatible with Sea to Summit's smaller multifunction valve, which is now featured on the updated Aeros pillow range, along with the Air Seats.

Exkin? Platinum

This is a very lightweight non-woven fabric that has a thin metalized layer applied to the surface. Exkin? Platinum thermal technology reflects radiant heat back to the user. Unlike reflective films used in conventional sleeping pads, Exkin? Platinum is silent.

Thermolite? HL-1

Thermolite? HL-1 is part of the family of Thermolite? materials used in Sea to Summit sleeping bags, sleeping bag liners and sleeping mats. HL-1 high loft insulation is a fiberfill constructed with a unique 3D crimp of hollow-core and solid fibers, which provides excellent lightweight warmth with superior durability. The Thermolite insulation lofts up inside the Air Sprung Cells? of our sleeping mats to prevent convective heat loss from your warm body to the cold ground.
